Change is bad, very bad, they'll have to prescribe me different meds and there will be the withdrawal symptoms and then there will be merry h#ll to pay because the tremors will get worse, advice more flawed (OK, flakey :P ) and I can't be held responsible for my actions - can you live with that guilt .......

Of course not - vote with your heart, not your head, indents are in (everything else is so passe  )

Are you using windows Gabrielle?

If so, try to delete your browser cache and try again (this thread has now been made to look the same as idle chat threads so plenty of examples now (if you can access them of course :D )

Teri

ps. if you want to vote then when you see the new page layout you have to post something first and then click on your choice for the poll - which I'd recommend be the first one :D :D :D then when you reload the page you'll see the progress of votes at the top of thread :-)

I never have that problem, as you can alter the width of the indent in your options.

I don't like the forums where the replies just all go under each other as you don't know what post is being replied to so have to quote the posts.

By Brainless (Moderator) [gb] Date 10.01.08 00:50 GMT
The reason I find champs easy to use is because the active topics takes you to the first unread post and because I can tell largely what replies are to what because of indenting.

If it went like most forums I would find it much harder to use.

How do you all go on other forums, where replies are in order of posting,eg the last reply is last on the thread. When i'm replying to someone on here or anywhere i usually use their name or quote the text i'm replying to.
Clicking on the post you want to reply to does not always ensure your post will end up underneath it,i've noticed it's mostly lucky dip where the post decides to land.
By Brainless (Moderator) [gb] Date 10.01.08 01:58 GMT
It will land under the post replied to but behind other replies to that particular psot.

I am a bit confused   What are we actually voting for? LOL  I click new everytime I come on, I get a list of new posts in order. They fit the full screen. Never had it any other way :-)
By Missie (*****) [gb] Date 10.01.08 10:36 GMT

>I am a bit confused<

I'm a lot confused
I've never understood how people manage to read posts when you've had to go up and down on the thread, reading replies to last posts has to wait while reading replies to posts that posters have replied to further up then scrolling down to see if any one has replied to the last post posted confused I didn't even realise that was why they were 'indented'
But now I see what you have been saying (Teri ;-) ) now that they are all in a line under each other :P :P

(I think)

confused of coventry
By ice_queen (*****) [gb] Date 10.01.08 11:07 GMT
I found the old way much easier to follow :-)  You could easily see who was talking to who when it was used correctly!  I can see now why so many times people would reply to one post but not reference tot hat one, it's because they didn't know. :D

Ktee,

>How do you all go on other forums, where replies are in order of posting

I manage, but most other forums I visit are smaller, specific forums with smaller membership and not such a wide variety of idea's and opinions and the only large threads are those where comments are put on pictures which is not a facility used on this forum.

>Clicking on the post you want to reply to does not always ensure your post will end up underneath it, i've noticed it's mostly lucky dip where the post decides to land.

I've never had a problem with where my posts go, they always go exactly where I expect them too :-)  and that is under the post I replied to, sometimes quite a way down though but it would be in line with and not indented in with all other posts that have replied to that reply.  If you can understand what I am trying to explain there?

MarkR,

>Your comments would be appreciated

If you do decide to change the format (to which the majority don't want according to the statistics of the poll!) then when we reply to the thread would we be able to see every ones post when we are writing our reply rather then just the one that we click reply to?  It's just with all this copy & pasting we will have to do and remembering who said what I ain't half gonna get confused, especially with the longer threads!!! confused

Teri,

I do hope you can see who I reply to and what I reply about in my post! :D
By Annie ns (****) [gb] Date 10.01.08 11:17 GMT
I can't seem to vote in the poll either, but have to say I much prefer the indented style.

Another query I have is the reply notification system, as presumably only the person who posted before you would get the notify no matter who you were replying to?
By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 10.01.08 12:52 GMT

>I click new everytime I come on, I get a list of new posts in order. They fit the full screen. Never had it any other way

Blue, it's like that when you click on 'New' or 'Unread' posts. :-) But you can't reply from there so you have to click onto the actual thread (I have to anyway, to get the Reply option), and that's where they're usually indented, so that you can easily see which post is being replied to (by followingthe inside edge upwards till you get to the next longer post). When they're all the same width you can't do that. :-(

Let's face it, there are plenty of misunderstandings with "Was that a reply to me?" when people just respond to the last post in a thread rather than the one they actually want to reply to. No indenting will make that more likely and will possibly lead to more arguments. :-(

Post again (on here that is :D ) then click vote and - listen carefully coz this is the important bit ;-) - when you go to vote be sure to check the Much Prefer Indented Layout option (not that I'd dream of trying to influence you :P :P :P )

keep trying M - you know it makes sense ;-)

Ooooooh..is that *it*??....oh heavens to Murgatroyd I thought I was missing out on something!!

right soooo..... In the past if you came into a conversation late (say 10 posters down) you could click on the comment you wanted to respond to and *sometimes* if noone had done the same your post would fall under theirs
This new way everyones post just falls chronologically.... and can still get all messy with different strands or tangents of a conversation going on.

OK... so we are swapping one potential muddle for another?
OK... I like the fact it stays in line (but that was easily remedied the old way if someone clicked on the OP to reply)
OK... given everything.... I maintain "If it aint broke..dont fix it" :P

You just click "quote" and it quotes the post AND say who you are quoting automatically, so much less hassle than what I have just done above. :-)

I agree.  A quote facility would help greatly as it's a bit of a rigmarole to copy and paste all the relevant bits of the post to which you want to refer your reply.

I dunno what this thread's coming to   I turn my back for two ticks and everything goes haywire >deep sigh of discontent<

Ok, ok, ok, (clears throat) - can we settle down at the back there, no chit chat, listen carefully and now let's deal with Liv first (although if PC World can't help her, what hope me? :D )

I know you've been lost in the darkness some time HG but it's time to become enlightened!  No good whingeing and saying you'd rather things stay as they are - you have to, wait for it, register your vote eek eek eek I know, I know, I know kiddo, it's all a bit scary but let me guide you ........ post, (a protest by all means) then press vote, check the first option, sit back and relax.   There, there, I'm here for you and I still have some Mackies with a rather tantalising Sarah Lee choc delight which could have your name on it  ;-)

tooolz - don't forget to take the patriotic stance that teensy weensy bit further - see directions above cool Gotcha!

ATTENTION MARIANNEB & SHAYNOLA  no need to complicate matters with this whole quote thingy (looks what it's doing to me for goodness sake, have neither of you any SHAME eek )  It's messy - keep CD tidy, your forum needs you :P

And  Pedlee - confused you think a tin hat will save you .............................. Poor, sweet child (nooooooooooooooooooooooo way that'll cover all the bases  :D )

to all and sundry and the undecided  Let's keep our heads high, the elitist, exclusive, entertaining and enlightening indention that we hold dear to our hearts is under threat to become "average" - remember when schools went comprehensive????? I rest my case ;-)

satincollie we can but try - figures still fluctuating a tad for me to rest easy but the spirits still high (but glasses are just within reach though :D )
