I have just noticed the flags alongside a posters name that would seem to denote the country a poster resides in. Brilliant idea and should help when replying to posts where the "country of origin" may make a difference to the information given.
By Lea (*****) [gb] Date 09.02.08 21:54 GMT

I have just noticed the too :-)

I'm am assuming that the appropriate flag has been determined by IP address which is fine in theory but there are exceptions which might cause contraversy in a very few cases ;-)

"Well at least even if you dont know any other flags, you will know the GB on so know that someone is in a different country :D"
In response to this; You can just point at the flag, and it will tell you which country it represents.
By Lea (*****) [gb] Date 09.02.08 22:08 GMT

Correct.

It is apparently 98% accurate , but it classes all AOL users as being in the US which is why we do not display the US flag.
By Lea (*****) [gb] Date 09.02.08 22:18 GMT
So if ypou are on AOL, can you email you nad have the right flag out on???

By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 08:51 GMT
It's a brilliant idea! Sometimes posters don't put their location in their profile and this will help avoid misunderstandings. :-)

By poloaussie (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 10:07 GMT
Loving the flags..........could mine be localised a little more? A Guernsey flag is the same as Englands with a gold cross over the red one.
Glad to be UK of course, though you have to look at the coast of France on the map usually to see the specks of Isles.
Karen ;-)
By ceejay (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 10:51 GMT
Hang on - can we drop the 'England' reference - it is United Kingdom.  Please don't leave out Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.   Otherwise there will be an awful lot of upset folks on here.   Poloaussie - didn't realise you were in the Channel Islands - what about the Isle of Man - they have a flag too.  This can get complicated.  Good idea though but still some work to do on it I think.
By ShaynLola (*****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 11:03 GMT
Have to agree Ceejay...Wales, Scotland and NI do tend to get forgotten about ;-)

The Northern Ireland thing is a particular minefield as about half the population would not want to be connected with the Union Jack flag in any way shape or form.  Doesn't particularly bother me as I'm happy to be considered either British or Irish (being that I am entitled to dual nationality) but it would be considered extremely offensive to some.  Not sure how Admin could avoid this though as all NI IP addresses will automatically indicate that the poster is British.

These are the complications, at least as I understand them!
Channel Isles are part of GB not UK, however we are proud to fly the Union Jack too. There are of course minority views that the Queen is not our Queen but is recognised as the Duke of Normandy, very small minority.....maybe just one or two still banging on. As this International I withdraw my request for GSY Flag and will be proud of a share in the UJ.

Karen ;-)
By ceejay (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 14:58 GMT
Yes - as long as folks don't go calling it the 'English' flag.  I am quite happy to be called British.
By poloaussie (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 15:16 GMT
LOL...but that is the description of the GY one 'English with gold cross' is how it is...not the UJ with gold.
Also, perish the thought of being English! Channel Islanders first then British....I support England in many things but am not English. Not that there is anything wrong with being English of course..............

Karen  :-)
By Christine (*****) Date 10.02.08 16:00 GMT
Well I haven`t got one & it says my IP is US ???? :-(

Very confused now.............
By ceejay (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 18:33 GMT
LOL Karen!  Actually I am English (but I don't say that too loud in this neck of the woods.) I was born over the other side of the border and my father was Welsh!  However I know how sensitive my hubby is when we travel and someone says - oh you're English!  I have been here so long that I support Welsh soccer team anyway.   Do you get many dog shows on Guernsey?  Or other doggie activities?
Christine
By poloaussie (****) [gb] Date 10.02.08 18:54 GMT
The Guernsey Kennel Club holds four shows a year and five matches, there is an obedience club and I believe agility too. A lot travel to Jersey and join in with the shows they hold, as they are more beneficial for serious showers, being 'champ shows'.Although here there are ways to qualify for Crufts, as indeed we did!

Karen :-)

Are you with AOL? Mark said further up the thread that all AOL addies show up as US-based for some reason, so they've not been given a flag.

No, you can only have the national flag of your ISP.

Shame it's ISP based else I'd have a Welsh flag but it's great to have an idea where everyone lives. Where's my flag? :D

How intresting, my flag has changed to sweden, I'm guessing this is because I'm on the train using National Express internet service, but how weird that it is sweden! :D  Should be back to normal shortly when I get to the house!
