Polo my standard poodle has a round area of pinky red on his lip. It doesn't look like the normal light pink pigment loss. Can anyone suggest what it could be/mean?

Hi is this an angry red area in the corner of his mouth?

Yes it is. What do you think it is? Thanks for replying

Could be wet eczema.

He's been chewing his feet a lot at the moment, could it be related?

Possibly.  I wonder if he has been troubled by harvest mites, they are rife around her just now, and the extra salivating has allowed the wet eczema to get a hold on his lips.  If he has harvest mites you may see tiny red dots on his feet.   If it is, treat the mites and mop the lips dry with a scrap of cornflour a few times a day.  If that doesn't clear it, off to the vet for some antifungal treatment.

Thanks Isabel. He has been in a field with long grass a lot recently. He's booked in for a check up at the vet  just in case.

That's best, they can sort you out with something for the mites, if it is them.  I used to use Novan Top but that is discontinued and I don't know what else does now as they don't seem to bother with my cocker.

Quite  few years ago one of my girls developed a very red and sore looking bit at the corner of her mouth. My vet referred her to the Royal Dick, Veterinary College to see a  dermatologist who did a biopsy. I cannot remember the name they gave it but she was put on antibiotics and anti bacterial ointment and it cleared up. They said that whatever it was was common in German Shepherds and was often linked with plastic feeding bowls and rubber toys.....neither of which I used.

The first thing my own vet tried was Bonjela but it didn't help but may in your situation.

Thanks for  replying. My vet has put Polo on AB's, she said if they dont work she'd do a biopsy.  What was the ointment? Thanks again.
Another question, unrelated. Polo's anal glands were full again, he only had them emptied about 6 weeks ago. He han't had diorhhea in that time, and he's fed on Wainwrights dry food and raw chicken legs with treats as well. The vet thought the raw chicken could be cause the anal glands to fill, she mentioned how a husky had gotten campylobacter by eating raw. Could the chicken be causing this then?

Hi,

The ointment was called Bactroban.

How long did it take to clear up? Three weeks of AB's later, the spot is healing but still there.

The sore bit took several weeks to heal completely and her pigmentation remained broken from the on.
