As it's a crossbreed may be hard.  Good luck in your search for a new dog though.

i sincerely hope you do not find this x breed!!!!! :-(  :-(  :-(

Do you think it's a cross they're after? I assumed a great dane or a bloodhound. Kind of different dogs in terms of lifestyle though.

As the OP has just lost a dog that was this cross then yes I would think it is a crossbreed they are looking for.  We all know the feeling of longing for another just the same unfortunately it never works out like that.

Ooops, missed that post. Erm, going to sit on the dunce chair now.

You're right about the crosses. My sister had littermates that were dane X ridgeback and they were so different they were like different breeds - and those were littermates.

That's the thing about crosses - no two will be alike. Let's face it, even in pedigree litters the dogs will all be individuals, but usually with the same overall trends (an innate need to retrieve, or to herd, for example). With a cross, especially a cross from dogs from different 'groups', that simply doesn't apply. All you can guarantee about this particular cross is that it will be a sunstantial animal - beyond that it's in the lap of the gods.

The danger is that, if it's being sought in the hope that it'll be like a previous dog, it'll be compared and found wanting, and perhaps subconsciously resented for that. :-(

very sorry about your loss hilary.

why are you after the same cross? as the other shave said its very unlikely that a new dog of the same cross would have the same nature, or event he same shape. as these are different breeds the pups will not breed true to a particular type- they might be giant bloodhounds, small great danes, have bloodhound bodies and dane heads, dane bodys and bloodhound wrinkles and ears or any other manner of combination.

why not contact breeders or both breeds, meet the individual breeds and see if you can find a purebred that seems to have a temp similar to your boys? then hope for a puppy similar to its mum or dad

as was said before the only things that can be expected in a dog are its breed traits like herding or retrieving. as yours was a cross it could either have had a dane nature, a bloodhound nature or something different so its pretty unlikely you'll find something similar, i am certain though that you'll be able to find something different but just as wonderful. your boy will have been unique and i'm sure whichever dog you go for next will unique as well in itself.

thats what concerns me as well, it will never be the same, no dog would, but should be seen as delightfully different.

when my special boy Chad died a while later my parents rescued a mastiff and i thought i would never like him because he wasn't chad. Odin was completely different in every way but in a very short time i loved him just as much as Chad.

hi the reason oi was looking for one the same was because he was a lovely dog and i appreciate no two dogs are ever the same not even my newfoundlands, i am 53 and had many dogs over the years, but some of you are right and some a little judgemental. My old boy was m,ore blood hound, he was lazy in the house gentle slobberish and hab=ad the most beautiful eyes, i know you cannot replace him but how wrong to think i would resent another look a like a true animal lover loves all animals for the character and and personality.
I would love any animal that come into my house, but i was a bit niave to think to get one the same.
Harry came from a litter of 15 his old owner said they were all placed in an animal sanctury. we ahve seen other around that looked like him.
i would fill my whole house with dogs cats birds but i have to be practicle its not a big house. once again thank you for your advice i have taken it on board and we are hoping to buy a bloodhound pup, but i wioll still look for my cross breed in the meantime lol

Hi Hilary,

Im sorry I can offer no assistance in your search, but just wanted to say, I could completely see where you were coming from. (I too blanched at the tone of one particular reply to you!) None of my Huskies have been 'the same' but they do/did all have the little breed specific Husky 'isms' that endeared me to the breed and so the dog. (and so the dogs were different but yet the same)
Best of luck in your search, do keep us all updated on how you get on.

Hi everyone we have now stopped looking for a dog especially bloodhound x, we have sat down and chatted and decided on another breed we are going to buy an american bulldog pup, a totally different breed it is a pup and will be a friend of our staffy, we are hoping to get him a week on saturday and are now deciding on a name for him, he is white with a bit of red on his bum, and is 12 weeks old. any suggestions on names.
Thank you all for your help and support,  som one suggested a grey hound in another post however my husband did not like a grey hound as he thought it might attack my little yorkie being tiny and runs very fast.)
