I already own an oversize 12 1/2 year old Sheltie. Looking for a puppy, ideally oversized.

Hi nandina

i guess that you are wondering why nobody has replied. Unfortunately i don't think that many reputable breeders would sell a puppy to you based on the ridiculous information you have provided. Many breeders don't breed for their dogs to be "oversized" and besides if you are looking for an oversized sheltie you might as well get a rough collie who just looks like a larger version. I do not mean to be rude in the slightest but as you obviously not very experienced i must tell you that when looking for a puppy you MUST provide more information about yourself. And I suggest that you do your homework and look for some reputable breeders (not asking for oversize puppies or giving them little information about yourself but convincing them why you would give the puppy a good, loving home). I am sorry to offend you or may appear to be going "off the point" but it annoys me very much when irresponsible people ask stupid questions. I think you should contact the shetland sheepdog club for more info. Like i said i am not being rude but please understand that i am trying to help.

if you are after a large shelti i would go to shows and see if there is a larger line you line then question the owners and breeders of that line about their dogs and try and put a rather clearer view of yourself over as well.

alternatively why not consider a rough collie?
you are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here

Cavalierz, I think that your reply was most certainly 'rude'. The OP hasn't provided ridiculous information at all, as they mentioned, they already have an oversized Sheltie and are looking for a similar dog - how much bigger than breed standard their dog is we don't know. Now I'm no expert when it comes to breeding etc but even reputable breeders do sometimes get pups in litters that aren't the perfect breed example and these pups need homes just the same as the 'perfect' ones.  Why would a breeder not wish to sell the OP a puppy on the basis of the information provided?? They simply asked a straight forward question on a public forum which is here to help people.
Nandina, I think I would perhaps contact the breed club and see if they have a puppy co-ordinator or look on the breeder list. When you have contact details of several breeders with litters or litters planned, get in touch and ask about the size of their dogs etc. Good luck.

Hi,
As a breeder of another breed, I would say it would be impossible to say at 8 weeks if a puppy would end up over sized.
As already suggested I would look for lines that might be already larger. Why not try your origanl breeder, they maybe still breeding. :-)
Some times breeder keep a pup back with the intention to show, then at six months or so, they have grown over sized and the breeder is looking for a new home.
Good Luck

Not sure where you are Nandina, but might be worth having a look at some of the lines that are competing in agility. I have it in my head that there used to a breeder or two who turned out larger than average Shelties.

True Chrisy - re size of pups @ 8 weeks.  Contacting breeders and enquiring about the average  size within their lines would be a good idea though?

Thanks to all those who have provided helpful advice. I know that sometimes breeders have pups (as mine did 12 1/2 years ago) that are larger than the breed standard or their lines may be larger. (The breeder actually told me that my currenct sheltie would be larger than average at the age of 10 weeks) Not ideal for showing but he proved to be an ideal size and perfect for me. I am happy to phone around breeders or contact the clubs but just thought their may be other owners out there who may have larger shelties. Initially, being new to the forum I just chose to put little detail about myself into the public domain but would be happy to give all of my personal arrangements in caring for my current sheltie and a possible new puppy to any breeder. I would not chose to return the original breeder who advertises on champdogs as my sheltie has a number of health problems which has involved visits to the Animal Health Trust and continuing health care from my Vet. I don't see myself as an expert but just someone who knows about the nature and health background of the sheltie and an absolute devotion to my dear companion that I've shared my walks and life with these past 12 1/2 years.

Hi Nandina,

and welcome to Champdogs (if something of a baptism of fire ;-) ) I notice this is your first post and I would hate for you to be put off this amazingly informative site by comments like this:

>it annoys me very much when irresponsible people ask stupid questions.<

In defence of the Poster who wrote that, I would hope retrospectively they would agree that... This is a site by name and virtue for Champdogs (and those breeders/owners producing and campaiging these dogs do so to breed type and temprement to standards) BUT this site is also for anyone who owns or has an interest in dogs and all things dog :-) to come together and share information and experiences, that ethos is what makes this site great and all posters should always be minded of that.
Education is a wonderful thing, and those that may think you 'stupid' should remember that if the 'general public' needs educating then that is what should be done, and as with the way we train our dogs we know that positive and NOT negative WORKS ;-) we wont change the world with a sneer.

Nandina, Im afraid I dont your breed, but would suggest that perhaps you look up the breeders on this site and check out their websites, also go to the breed club and check out approved breeders have a look at all the dogs and see if you like the look of a 'line' (family heritage if you will) meanwhile keep popping back here, as you see some folk may have some pointers like LillyMc has.

Hope this helps? let us know how you get on wont you.
Liv.

Hi Nandina, sorry to hear your current Sheltie has had health problems.

I think Astarte and Lily Mc have given some good advice - when I was deciding on the "type" of breeding that I liked in my breed, I went along to shows and studied the dogs produced by the different breeders to get an idea of the type I liked. If you like the "larger" type of Sheltie, why not go along to a show and buy a catalogue of entries. This will give you an idea of what types are out there as you will be able to see the breeder details and dogs' parentage.

Also a good idea to ring around breeders / contact the Sheltie breed clubs to see if any breeders have pups that have been run on that have grown just above the standard - after all, they all need good homes. Sorry if this sounds like I'm repeating what everyone else has said! And for the record, I don't think you should have to provide a full rundown on your background on a forum either - save that part for your breeder as if they are a good caring one they will want to know everything ;-)

Thanks for all your kind and helpful advice. Much appreciated

In my experience, Shelties are very much a breed where breeders at certain stages have had trouble getting them either up to size or down to correct size. Several breeders now get quite technical about weights at certain ages to predict adult size, so I would guess that you will find someone who can help.

This is not relevant but quite cute.
When my daughter was about 4 she was invited to a Birthday Party. She fell in love with the host family dog, a Sheltie, on arriving home she could not remember the breed name. A friend of ours had 4 Rough Collies, my daughters favourite one was named very originally "Lassie". In desperation and with all the wisdom of a 4 year old she described the Sheltie as a "Lassie NO Legs"...

If  you like to pm me i'll let you have the  name of a kennel that  produces shelties for agility if you are still interested..
By Nandina [gb] Date 17.08.08 21:13 GMT
The breed standard for male shelties is 14.5 ins and for rough colllie males 22-24 ins. My Sheltie measures 18 ins at the withers.
