I'm looking to purchase a male clumber spaniel next year. Can anyone tell me the average wait for a clumber puppy as I understand that there are not many about. Should I be putting my name down for one now? Sam.

for a breed this rare probably. worst case senario you turn down the first litter your offered and wait a bit more. generally the only a breeder knows you the happier they will be for you to have a pup. did you have a breeder in mind?

they are a gorgeous breed

Someone at my gundog training has a great looking Clumber, although more the working strain.  He says that they're not as docile as many people think (compared to other gundog breeds of course :-) .

I would say yes - I believe clumber pups can be quite difficult to get hold of. You could try  http://www.workingclumber.co.uk/ and\or http://www.clumberspanielclub.co.uk/ for information re the breed and breeders etc. I believe you have to be partial to a lot of hair and drool. :-D

I'm looking for a show dog, but mainly a family pet. I'm aware of the drool and hair, but as i have a bullie and a retreiver, not a major issue!! Guess I'll start emailing breeders then. Thanks. Sam.

My OH had a clumber and thought it was a fantastic dog. We watched them at Crufts this year good luck with your search.

Make sure they are hip scored. :-) Hips are a problem in clumbers. I think there are other health issues too - but the breed club will be able to tell you more. Good luck. :-)

Hips are a problem in the breed but don't forget that the breeding score with dogs will more than likely be higher than many other breeds.

They seem a lovely breed.  I know someone who has one from working lines and he's gorgeous.  I can PM you his website if you want, lots of wonderful photo's of the breed.

Well yes you need to take it in conjunction with the breed average (which I think is 43 eek ) - but the breed club will be best placed to help you on health as they will know the breed. :-)

Yes please. I'd like the roundest view of the breed possible. Went up to Birmingham at the weekend and met some fantastic dogs, the whole family loved them. Well aware of the hip problems, and the eyes and a few other health issues, but prepared for these. Thanks, Sam.

I think you need to decide whether to go for the show or working ones as they are different.

The working ones are more athletic and seem to have more leg.  I have one that comes to our training classes and she is gorgeous, and more moderate looking than some of the what seem to me to be overdone show examples I have seen.

Could of course be like with Labs that some people get them too heavy for the Ring.

As I said previously, I am looking for a show dog and pet. I do not have the time to do justice to a proper working gundog, although there appear to be a few clumbers that cross over, doing both shows and trials. Sam.

The one I know comes from a breeder who does both.

Some cross the show and working. The show ones seem to have more face folds etc and the working ones have the tighter neater faces - from my non clumber owning view of the breed. I have to say in most gundog breeds where they have diverged into show and working 'types' I prefer the working types - springers and cockers etc...
