Any ideas please on how to discourage this............my pup (6months old) Is an extreme jumper, in the kitchen, lounge or any where she thinks she should be.
She is a small terrier breed, and jumps higher than my grown up male! 
So nothing is safe in the kitchen unless it is pushed at leaast 6" away from the front of the surface.
Could it be she will grow out of this with general telling off, or should I be doing something else?

I'll be watching this thread with great interest!  My youngster, now 17 months old had been doing this since she was tiny!  She frequently does "kangaroo jumps" to face level and does the "wall of death" round my living room vaulting off the tops of seats etc!!  No ammount of distractions, tellings off, spraying with water has helped.  I've even tried holding her until she's quiet and stops struggling only for her to tuck her bum underneath her and go flying round the room even faster as soon as I let go!!  We call it her "mad half hour".

Edited to add: Have just gone back through to see what the fuss is about and she's now lying upside down rolling and wriggling on a bone and growling!!  Totally mad!!

For general jumping up it is best to ignore the behaviour.  As you have a small terrier they cant exactly get on the side to steal anything.
If the ignore method doesnt work you could try setting an invisable boundary by not allowing the dog in that space.  If they go over a set area (sometimes useful for us humans to use a bit of tape on the floor as a reminder) just say no or back up.  I have a tendancy to clap my hands if they ignore my voice.  Most dogs will move away but if they dont place them on the otherside of the line.

We have managed to set one of these invisable lines for all but our youngest (she is still learning) about a metre from the front door as we used to have an issue with them wanting to meet the postman or anyone who knocked at the door.

Little dog are always a pain for jumping up as they always want to see what you are up to.

Also to belgian bonkers I think that is just puppy madness, try to ignore the behaviour.  Even leave the room when she starts, she will most probably stop and see what you are up to instead.  If she doesnt get out of it then she may need a bit more exercise to tire her out.

It's just sheer exuberance and excitement with my youngster.  She certainly doesn't lack exercise both mentally or physically, she's just a very happy baby!  I've tried going out of the room and ignoring her, she just jumps allover the other dogs to try and get them wound up too!

Puppies you gotta love them, I agree some just seem to be super excitable (nutters) then one day they just give up and calm down.  Until they are really muddy and you have a new sofa.

I have a 20 week old jumper, she thinks she's part Kangaroo   She hasn't started on things on the wortop yet - but she will!  And I'm just ready and waiting LOL

I have tea towels (old ones) and I have a small metal tin with dried peas inside, taped up and glued so it can't be opened.  One day these will be left on the work top, tin on top of tea towel so she can get to them.  You'll guess the rest   If she continues I have a bigger tin (empty baby-milk tin) and the same tea towel.  It worked a treat with the other two.  

The key to this is that they mustn't see you set it up, put her outside for a few minutes   there must be NO connection between you and the boobytrap or it won't have the desired effect.  And when it all kicks off.. don't rush in to see the effect.  Stay away for a minute or two and don't say anything or she'll guess what's going on.   It must all come from GOD

Will have to try the noisy tin trick........she really never gives it a break, you'd think there were springs in her paws! She managed to get a whole cucumber the other day, just caught her chomping it on the floor.
