I AM WORKING WITH A LADY CALLED NINA BONDARENKO (GUESSING LOTS OF YOU WILL OF HEARD OF HER!) WHO HAS SUCCESSFULLY TRAININED TWO DOGS TO DETECT LOW BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS IN HUMANS. SHE IS ABOUT TO SET UP A NEW CHARITY FOCUSING ON TRAINING DOGS FOR THIS PURPOSE AND CARRYING OUT RESEARCH PROJECTS.
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE DIABETES (OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS) AND YOUR DOG WARNS YOU IN SOME WAY I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE PART IN THIS PROJECT PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

This is great. I have been wondering when someone would try to train dogs to spot low blood sugar. I have type 1 Diabetes and most of the time I can tell when my blood sugar levels are low, but sometimes when I'm out or busy the signs are not so easily noticed. Unfortunately my dogs do not show any signs of noticing when my blood sugar levels are low so sorry cannot really help.

This is really strange ...my hubby has Type 1 diabetes since the age of 12 hes now 57 and in good health thank God .But years ago we had a GSD who ALWAYS ran upstairs on the landing just before my husband showed signs of being low
Dogs can tell if someone has cancer so its not a surprise a GSD who could sense or prehaps smell Diabetis!

Thankfully my dad's not had many hypo's. I bet his dog Lana could be trained as she is sensitive to certain things. My Carmen seems to be able to detect certain things in the other dogs like when Lydia's (my golden oldie) eyes seem a bit sore or ears etc. She can find the tiniest of cuts as well and pesters me if I have a papercut!
My dogs aren't my whole life, but my life wouldn't be whole without them. 05/01/08 11 stone 12 lbs
I have been a type 1 diabetic for 43 years. Our bichon gets agitated when I have a hypo but I would put this down to him reacting to the symptom of sweating, but as previously said, dogs seem sensitive to all kinds of things.

I have type 1 diabetes and my gwp alerts me if I am going low but also has a different reaction if I am high. He is the only one out of 8 dogs we have that does it. He also alerts my dad when he is low.
