Hi, Can anyone offer me some advice to prevent my dog from biting her lead on walks.  She enjoys her walks and behaves pretty well (mostly).  She is only 6 1/2 months old.  The lead biting doesn't happen all the time,  but I struggle to stop her as it becomes a big game.  When she has the lead in her mouth she will still walk happily next to me.  I have tried a bitter spray on the lead, but it had no effect.

My little boy is almost 7 months and does the same, I have found the best thing to do is ignore him and he soon gets bored when he realises that he is not getting a reaction. This works for me but I am sure others will be along with better ideas

Agree with the above post, you could also couple this with distraction such as asking for a sit or a down for which you can give a reward, so the lead biting is unrewarding by comparison.

Distraction works well.  Whip some interesting toy out of your pocket and lead will be forgotten.

my five month old Boxer started doing this a couple of weeks ago.  I have found the easiest way to stop it is it to read the signs and as he is about to reach to bite it I bring the lead up high vertically and right behind his neck so he can't get it, I don't pull it tight or anything I just put it out of reach. Alternatively I just stop dead and don't move until he releases it. Both these methods have worked and he rarely tries to bite it now. Good luck

Our young terrier used to do this so I bought a lead that has chain at the end where the clip is and this stopped him from grabbing the lead. I can now use any lead on him

My pup started this a few weeks ago.  It soon stopped when I put Vicks on the lead (soft woven leash)    suddenly it wasn't nice to chew it any more

With terriers you have to make them think it was their idea   or in this case, she decided not to chew the lead any more

OK Guys, we've been for a few walks and tried a few of things as advised.  The first walk  - I was lulled in to a false sense of security as there was no lead biting and she walked like a dream.  I felt guilty about posting my first question when my lovely puppy behaved like an angel!!!!  The next walks, lead biting de-lux........ so I went for the distraction with a toy which worked well, but I might have got her over excited about it and she wanted to play tug.  So my theory is I (rather than my pup) need a bit more work and it looks like I'm heading to Boots tomorrow for some Vics Vapo Rub!!!! D x

You beat me too it, yes vicks vapour rub on the lead and they hate the taste and smell so wont do it more than a couple of times.
Great way to snap them out of the behaviour before it gets worse.
