Hi
My sister emailed me today with a very cute picture of a 5 week old chocolate lab that they " fell in love with " and will be bringing home in 3 weeks time. Before this picture I thought they were looking for a dobe!!! What health tests should the parents have had before breeding so I can give her this advise. Hips I presume is a must and perhaps elbow but is there anything else you would reccomend. They were given  breeder details from the KC and from the pictures there were plenty of rossettes in the background so I presume these are show labs but just want to make sure she has asked the right questions before she gets puppy.
Thanks for any help

Both parents should have hips/elbows...The breed average at the moment is 15.. the breed mean is 10...  Elbows should be 0:0
The should both have CURRENT eye certificates.. these need to be done annually.. so please make sure the certificates are current..
We now have the option to Optigen test for GPRA (Genetic Progressive Retinal Atrophy).. .but dont be too worried if parents have not had these done.. the tests are not yet done in the UK.. and are bloods are required to be sent to the US for DNA testing.. and although many breeders are now taking up this test.. there are many who have not yet done so...In fact the KC have only just accepted the Optigen results and published them in the BRS for the 1st time this year....  but Please.. do make sure that the annual tests have been done...

good luck
