Previous Next Up Topic Dog Boards / General / need some advice on the use of sulphur with dogs...

Hi all,

I am pretty new to owning a dog...I have read in several forums about the use of sulphur to clear up skin problems as well as to control fleas etc - there seems to be a million and one uses for sulphur....the problem is that I have not yet been able to find anything about the quantity of sulphur to use, if pure or diluted.
I live in Portugal and some of the products that I have seen online may not be readily available here and I was wondering if the sulphur mentioned for use with dogs is the normal sulphur that you would get in a drugstore.

any help will be welcome:)

thanx

Hi Wildchild,

Welcome to Champdogs :-)
By a strange twist of fate, I have a link you may find interesting it is an Italian Vet discussing Sulphur use ( I have a family member who moved to Italy, hence I stored this away in my library)
If you scroll down about half way sulphur availability in European pharmacies is discussed :-)

I would say that as much as internet research can be useful it can also be a bit of a false prophet! so not knowing your reasons for using sulphur, its hard to advise accordingly, but if it is for a skin condition I would advise a vet look it over first perhaps.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for you help, will look through the link that you sent and give some feed back.

Just so you know, the reason that I wanted to use sulphur is for flea control, along with some friends of mine we started a rescue organisation in Portugal to help stray dogs and cats, well the other day I had to go into a wooded area (not too far of the road) because there were supposed to be a dog and her puppies just to see if I could find her and if all was ok...anyway I must have been there for a few mins, which was enough to have brought back a whole bunch of fleas...I only noticed this as I was entering the house and luckily managed to get rid of them all before actually bringing them home with me....unfortunately my car was not so lucky and there are some fleas living in my car. as you will already know fleas can fit into the little spaces that a car has and is pretty hard to get rid of.
Anyway, as you say the internet could be a bit of a false prophet, I had read that sulphur was a good way of killing off fleas and other little creepy crawlies...Just not too sure of the effects that it may have on my dog (or myself for that matter) as I transport her in my car quite often...I was thinking of sprinkling some in my car and leaving it for a few days and then vacuuming it up....
if you know of a better trick please let me know :-)

Thank yopu for your help.
