On Tuesday my old boy (going to be 14 in a week) found a hole in our fence and went visiting next door. They have an avery of Paraquet (I think) and I think when they feed the birds they throw the old seed from the food bowel out for the wild birds to get. Anyway I think my boy has eaten it. Yesterday (Wednesday) he was sick 3 times - the first obviously seeds and subsequently his breakfast and a lot of liquid. I made sure he didn't eat anything for the rest of the day and this morning given him a 1-egg scramble egg made in the microwave with no fat and no milk (just a dash of water). I intend to do the same in a few hours and early afternoon and this evening give him half an egg with some of his normal dry food heavily soaked. This is what I would normally do with a tummy upset.

However it has occurred to me - is the bird aspect anything to be particularly worried about? Does anybody know if bird food is especially bad for dogs and can dogs pick up infection from bird poo?

He seems OK in himself - just very hungry.

Not an expert. However my dogs have and do eat a small amount of canary mix with no ill effects when my husband has been pottering in and out of his bird hull. Dogs can pick up infection from wild bird droppings such as Campylobacter or gardia, but I would have thought it less likely from captive birds if they are well looked after.

Thanks for your experience. I believe next door's birds are well looked after so hopefully that isn't the issue. Unfortunately I wasn't home at the time of his visiting next door, my husband dealt with it. I only heard about the incident when he was sick the second time. My husband knew he'd been eating something and had checked with the neigbours (who had helped him get hold of our dog, who is now deaf due to old age) that they hadn't put anything down. I'm hoping it's just that his body didn't like all the seeds. Time will tell I suppose but I can't make up my mind whether I should contact the vet.
