When I came down this morning our 12 week old pup had done a poo during the night (Nothing new ha ha) The poo when a lose log and had a 2 inch what can only be described as what looked like a bit of pasta long and thin, to the one side of it not actually in the poo, there was only one, she was treated with advocate 5 weeks ago so is due to be wormed again now, which I will do today, my question is what type of worm does this sound like? If in fact it is a worm. I have never seen one before, all her other poo's have been clear of anything like this, it was yellow/cream in colour I have had a look in my dog book but the only worm it looks like from the pictures I have in there is heartworm. Any links of information gratefully received. I am waiting as I type for her to go again.

Thanks for the links it looks like round worm then, i have been to vets and got some more advocote, so will get that on her when other half gets up, its really a two person job.

She has had two poos since and there has been nothing at all, and the poo this morning only had one, does this sound right? also would it of been moving if it was a worm? would there normally be more than one? I have been thinking we had a take away of monday and we had  chow mein, maybe we dropped alittle on the floor and she ate some!! I don't know.  One thing is for sure i'm off that now ewwwwwwwwwww.. I feel sick

It sounds to me more like something she's eaten Unless of course it was moving...

Just when i thought i had it sorted..

I have just been out in the garden to see pup and on the vet bedding in the play pen is a worm same as yesterday morning that was in her pop this time tho no pop and was just on her bed, i would say it is not moving i have put it up to show my OH.  From pic i've seen i would say this is round worm, can anybody tell me what i need to do? I have treate her with AVOCATE which does treat worms etc. Should/can i do anything else? How long untill she is clear of them?? Sorry my words are a bit jumbled up, i'm such a worrier!

Why don't you use a regular wormer - i.e. a tablet such as drontal, milbemax etc?

TBH I would not use a topical product on any animal for an internal parasite - something which is supposedly so strong put on the neck as to affect every part of the ears, gut and outer body/skin is IMO far too strong a chemical.

My personal opinion of course.  Hopefully you manage to get things sorted soon

ps. Just as an aside and for general info, heart worm is not the only more unusual parasite which can be found in the UK.  Lung worm is also becoming more often heard of and I know can be picked up by dogs eating slugs/snails.

If I were you I think I would pop it in a jam jar and ask the vet what it is. Yuk!

Ewwww i know. We now know for sure that it is Roundworm. Any advice would be great.

the fact you've only just used Advocate I'd recommend you check with your vet what your best course of action is - some wormers are more effective than others on specific types of worm and of course it's important with a youngster you don't overdose on meds.

Best take professional advice IMO before doing anything else.

Another quick update! Pup has done a poo and it was 90% worms, some of the worms were rolled up like a spring others were just straight. I must say i feel so sick. How common are worms in young pups, mine being 13 weeks old? I have never seen worms before in any of my dogs.

The lady i spoke to at the vets has told me to not give pup anything else.

Pup is well in self eating and playing as normal, is this right? Do you normally find that puppies/ dogs with worms seem unwell?

Poor pup - it sounds as though he has a massive worm burden to get rid of! This sort of worm burden is usually only seen in pups who've not been wormed properly by their breeder. How often did his breeder worm him, and what with?

I am not sure altho the paperwork says it was done 2 4 6 weeks and i would need to o her again at 8, i had pup at 8 weeks and was wormed with advocate the next day by me, then i wormed again y'day which was 5 weeks since first doing it, i am so worried.

Are worms like i'm seeing very commom? I will also add that the pup is a toy breed.

Roundf worms are almost alwqays seen in puppies and not very often in adult dogs, unless their worming in puppyhood was not carried out effectively.

Yoy really need to speak to your vet about this problem, so they can best advise you what furthur action to take. This was not just an 'odd worm' but an infestation which could have caused serious health problems, and to ensure that the puppy is clear you need to ask your vet what to do next. As in a stool sample, or furthur close worming medications to completly clear the worms and their eggs etc.

Don't swop food now, you don't want to upset her tummy.

Pup has been wormed with a vet prescribed worming treatment like it says in my above posting. , she will need to have it repeated in 2 weeks time and then every month there after.

I wonder which product the breeder used.  It may have been one of the old fashioned less effective wormers (Piperazine for example only kills adult worms which is why it has to be given two weekly).  Wormers like Panacur kill some of the larval stages as well as mature worms and you generally do not see nay actual worms unless it is a first worming of an older pup that has not been wormed properly before.

i swear by dronital puppy ! none of my pups pass worms like that ,i start at 2 -4-6-8-10-12 then at 4months and every month till 6months then every 3months for life x

When i say is it a good wormer, i mean that in the sense that is it a good one as a treatment rather than a preventative.

yes, but your puppy has a worm infestation, and your vet needs to know this. This is not just the odd worm, if this puppy has never been wormed, or wormed with one which for some reason has not worked, then she has never been wormed which could cause her problems. Your vet needs to know so that they can best advise you what to use and how frequently, and to check the stools to ensure the treatment has worked.

Pup has been to the vets, on advise she has been wormed using advocate, she needs to be wormed again in two weeks from the first treatment and then again every month after as I have written in my above post.

The question I was asking was on peoples view on Advocate.

I think what Calmstorm means is has the pup been wormed regularly since a few weeks old, or has the worm infestation been allowed to build up?

She was wormed with her breeder up untill 6 weeks, then i was told she would need to be done at 8 weeks, when i bought her home, which i did do with advocate. Hope this helps.

My concern would be the fact that Advocate is described as:
Advocate for Dogs kills fleas, PREVENTS heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm and controls mange and lice with monthly topical application.
It also doesn't stop tapeworm.
I would have thought if there was quite a severe infestation you would want to use an oral medication that kills/rids the system of the worms. It maybe that for some reason, the advocate has not had the desired effect on your pup.

I would see the vet again and try something different like drontal etc.

I'd also want to know what it had already been wormed with @ 2, 4 and 6 weeks? Why did the OP not continue with that?

I had this problem with my boy when he was a pup, he had a bad case of worms even though I had wormed him (think he may of eaten some one elses poo) some times the wormers just don't work at that moment, anyways the vet gave him a jab to sort it then some more milbimax which I've always used and continued to use and have only ever had that one problem.

My friend uses drontal and has also had no problems, I would say those are the 2 best wormers.
I think internal for internal, external for external!

Clearly the avocate wasn't good as a treatment as it didn't clear up your pups worms.
