Hi! I have a 5 month old westie who has REALLY itchy skin! In mist places (legs, mouth ect.) the skin is broken and
scabby. We have brought him to the vet a couple of times and he gave us a cream. It helped at first but the itching has come back.
His skin is really pink. Just wondering if anyone could give us some advice? Thanks!
If you want the best seat in the house....move the dog!!!

Yes I agree, white dogs, not just Westies are prone to itching. I control it in mine by diet, a raw diet such as the Barf diet will probably stop the itching. I know it did in mine. Also make sure to use Frontline or one of those types of flea control as anything such as sitting on grass and picking up little insects in their fur used to set mine off. Steroids will help to heal it up, but you really want to get to the root cause of it so that it is kept to a minimum.
No matter what you do to me, I will not give you the power to make me hate.
Hello
I have an itchy Westie too. At least he was itchy at 9 months old but for the five years since then, he has been fine.
After a lot of trial and error, we found that changing his diet did the trick. He was on Iams to begin with, but we changed to Wafcol Salmon and Potato complete and then to Burns Fish and Rice. He was fine on both, but the Burns is slightly cheaper so we changed to that.
There is a lot of cr@p in many of the well known brands of dog food available in the supermarket, including high levels of salt, sugar, flavourings, colours etc, so first, if your dog is on a mainstream brand of food, I would advise looking at the label of it. If it does have high levels of additives, I would suggest trying changing his diet to an ultra hypoallergenic food, like the Wafcol Salmon and Potato (although I'm not sure if that is suitable for puppies as young as five months so you'd need to do a bit of research.)
