Hiya all,

We have a litter of 9 pups born last week - 4 naturally and then the other 5 by cs. A few hours ago one pup has started to act very distressed, crying as if in pain. Ive tried all the usual , wet cotton to make her poop, sucess. she had a small feed an hour ago but hardly any. She seems very tired but unable to sleep for more than a minute or so. If she were a human baby is say she had colic/tummy ache..?
have spoken to emergency vet nurse who says she can see her if i like but also that its unlikely they could make her any more comforable than we can here (with mum). she isnt interested in feeding now, she seems to want to sleep but cant ?

any ideas as to what i can do make her more comfy ? its breaking my heart poor little might :-(

You can give new born puppies gripe water so its worth a try.
Is she better if being held slightly upright,if so it would be worth propping her up a little to.
An empty vessel makes the most noise. :-)

Hiya, well after further investigation we found it wasnt her tum but her face/neck that was giving her pain. so after a visit to vets at midnight (!) it turns out she has a puppy form of mumps! ive not heard of this before?
After some pain relief and starting anti-b she is now much more settled and feeding well im happy to say

Is that puppy strangles or head gland disease.

Vet wasnt 100% sure 'a mumps type virus'  she thinks (looking back thats more vague than im happy with but at 1am it was enough!) she is responding well to anti-b's,  no sores, abcesses etc to imply head gland disease (dont like to use the strangles term lol) so im hoping she will do ok

You know, I had a very small pup 7 years ago that all of a sudden started screaming as if in pain. Couldn't sleep and cried. I took her off to the Vet and there was a swelling on her face. The Vet thought as she was so small (only 5 ozs at birth, a Golden) and obviously in pain that she wouldn't survive. But she gave her an AB jab and sent me home. She came back from the Vets, slept and then fed for all she was worth. She never looked back after that. We always thought that maybe the mother had trodden on the side of her face and that is what had caused the swelling. I didn't know they could get mumps, we learn something new every day. Glad to hear that your pup is now doing better.

Just read this on a web site.

Quote.
'Humans are the only known natural hosts of the mumps virus, although close
contact between children and their dogs can occasionally result in canine
mumps parotitis. This virus is spread by direct contact via the respiratory
route.

interesting..
