Has anyone here imported a dog from Sweden? If so how did you do it and how much did it cost? I am trying to research this as costs seem to vary and so does information about how you can get these dogs to the UK. Somebody I know is trying to import a min english toy terrier, and has been quoted £940 to fly it here cargo. She tried to get it taken to France to come in via the tunnel and that worked out just as costly.

So I was wondering what are the experiences of the CDers?

I have not imported a dog from Scandinavia but have recently from Hungary so I hope this will be of some help.
Have you thought about driving? Or possible maybe meet the breeder in Denmark/Germany or at a show somewhere. I am not a fan of flying dogs but that is just me, I do know of plenty of dogs that have flown no problem.

Not imported a dog, but 2 cats from Sweden, will that do? (Plus I went to the World Show with one of my dogs so did bring one from Sweden in that sense.) (Actually, thinking about it, I HAVE imported an adult dog from Sweden, my own, but that was before pets passports and way back in 1990.) When we decided how to get to the WDS and back I looked into different ways and came to the conclusion that as far as costs went, flying cargo wasn't going to be cheaper than driving, so we drove. But it took a LOT of time. The trouble is that any pet passorted dog of a large breed will be fully grown by the time it can come to the UK, so the crate needs to be huge and all costs are calculated on size of crate more than weight. Then again, if you don't need to travel YOURSELF, cargo will more than likely work out cheaper. Our WDS trip, in traveling costs ONLY, cost around £1500. (Petrol plus ferry.)

Obviously it depends a bit on WHERE in the UK and WHERE in Sweden, but for us to get from South Yorkshire to Stockholm driving took 3 days. The flight on the other hand will be just over 2 hours. I have no idea about costs, but export requirements for pups to Sweden you will find here:

Can't believe that such a small breed would cost so much!!! 

When I flew with my bitch to Finland in 2006 and back it cost over £1200, out was excess baggage and return was Cargo.

It was actually cheaper to fly with her and pay the excess baggage charges and freight only on return than to send her both ways cargo.

I have looked into importing, though this would of been from Belgium had a decided to go ahead with it.
I couldn't afford for the breeder to look after it until it had passed through its Pet Passport and there is no way i would have the pup in quarantine. The cost would of been so high compared to that of raising a pup from a breeder in the UK.
I personally would prefer to drive and make a little trip out of it as well.

When we went to get our girl in September (from Finland) we took somebody elses dog with us to Finland and came back with our girl.
This way we shared some of the costs which worked for both of us .
Flying wasn't really an option because of the size of our girl so we knew we have to drive.

Maybe you should try to find out if anybody else is doing the same trip or wants their dog to go to Sweden.

We are in the process of importing a Catalan Sheepdog from sweden and have been quoted £1300 to fly him over and to do all the paperwork .
our boy wont be comong into the uk until April/May next year so this is a very intresting subject for us .
I know talking to our breeder that the rules change on 1st Jan and all dogs have to travel as cargo.

briedog will not be driving he will be be delived to me bye car by someone elis when ever he gets here,
but 5 years ago i did bring in a fcr from sweden the cost then was £500 throw an agent ladyhaye they were very good and i collect him then from gatwick airport,
since then all dogs that are flying into the uk have to come bye an agent not bye the airline dirct so that where the cost as rise over the years i did get quotes last year to bring in phoneix in bye plane £1000,then i thought about driving over and weight up the cost of that,
with time off work with out pay,the cost of ferry or tunnel,hotel,petrol,food for me and dog,a round trip of 5 days alot more than the cost of flying and it only take two hours bye plane but of course the time before the flight to check the dog in at cargo and the time at the other end collection with the paper work just under 8 hours for the dog from stockholm to gatwick,
less stressfull any acouple of days in a car,
but the dog i had that came to me was a jettsetter he went on to the staytes after living with me,
i will be going off to beglium with tangle once she comes into season,i will be going bye car only 280 miles from home but you got the sea between us that the cost,of the tunnel £300 return,petrol,hotel and food hopefully with in 48 hours,

there are agents out there that collect dogs bye car to i have look into that but didnt get price at the time.
there are alot of dog people that come and go from sweden to shows i know that how phoenix will come over ,when they all come over for crufts 2009,i will give some cost the petrol and time for bring over,
so there may be someone that may have room in their car,the only worry would be if that dog as a problem with his pet passport and could not enter the uk,that poor person who bring him will be stuck,
that why an agrent is wise to have beacuse they will double check every thing,
i do know of two fcr that landed at heathrow and had a problem with their paperwork so they couldnt enter the uk they had to be held in kennels at the airport over night then travel back the next day the vet didnt fill in the paper right this was before the agent were drafting,

the only reason phoenix will come over bye car he will be coming with someone that know the system of the pet passport and as travel all over with dogs,
you just have to find the right person or agent

Thanks everyone, seems Susan is right then it is extremely expensive, especially when you think the dog she wants to bring in is the size of a small cat. The breeder of her dog even looked into flying it to France which is cheaper, and guess what the plane has to stop on the way at Heathrow! The dog cannot be off loaded though, it has to go onto France.

I imported a Hamiltonstovare from Sweden in April...he is although residing and being campaigned in the Netherlands at the moment.... (he has already won a BPIS )

You have the choice of taking ferry to Holland (either from Hull, which takes a few hours extra or Harwich, which we we did) and then driving through Holland, Germany and Denmark, or taking ferry or eurotunnel to France and adding Belgium to the countries. You cannot take the ferry to Denmark if you have a dog with you either way as they do not accept dogs. Why would you need to leave the EU? All the countries concerned are EU countries. We found the worst trouble was needing several lots of currency as Denmark and Sweden have their own. I have vivid memories of not being able to use the toilet at motorway services in Germany as we had no euro coins LOL.

Generally they are FAR more relaxed (most rules say you rabies vaccinate and then off you go after a month or so -no 6 months wait) and indeed when we did this all we ONLY had the pets passort checked when leaving the UK and when boarding the ferry in Holland back to the UK. There are no border controls at all in Holland, Germany and Denmark, you just drive straight through, no barriers or anything, just a sign announcing the new country, and when we drove into Sweden I virtually thrust the pets passport at a customs official who wanted to just wave us through, he opened it at the wrong page, glanced for a split second and handed it back. (But otherwise, yes, to get into Sweden you must worm the dog within TEN days of arrival, but this was never checked.)

Now sorry to hijack this thread but can I ask if anyone here has exported a puppy to the US, and if so can you tell me what courier you used if any and a rough idea of costs?

Maybe I'm being really dumb, but isn't there water between Denmark and Sweden? I can see how you get to Denmark, but that doesn't get you to Sweden. Surely you either have to get a ferry between the two, or else drive through the baltic states and Russia (which would take you out of the EU).

I'm going to be bringing over a RR pup from Finland in April/May.  Anyone else doing the same?  Sounds like some of us need to get together and do some car sharing

Check with  DEFRA and also the airline being used plu the receiving Australian state.  There is a quarantine period of 30 days from memory - regardless of vaccs and going direct from the UK.

we exported to many countries all over the world and used  pettravelagencies! they know all about the required paperwork, the import/exportrules, the vaccinations needed etc .. this to avoid any surprises(  or a dog to be send back, go into quarantaine etc) we have found out that it is not that much more expensive and if a dogs flies alone,without company at least one is sure he /she is well taken care of.

if you click/google for IPATA you will find Petshippers, just fill in the country you are living etc .; they supply you with licensed petshippers/agencies ..

I imported a dog from Sweden 1 year yesterday.
I flew over many times before he actually arrived here.
To collect him I went by overnight ferry to Denmark,drove across Denmark into Sweden where the breeder met me.I then drove into Germany,through Holland,into France & home & would do it again tomorrow.It was a great experience.
