I have bought Alfie our pup a bob martin ham bone and he loves it!!! I dont want it out all day as i dont want to make him ill as he has never had them before, and dont want him to have it when we are not there.

What should i do with it in the meantime??? Shall i just put it i the fridge?? How long will it last before it goes off???

Aren't these cooked? I saw an online article recently about a dog that died after one of these type of bones - I would bin it and ask butcher for a raw bone - it will probably be free

I am pretty certain they are cooked.
A faw bone .... my dogs have various storage methods

Bury it
Hide it under a cushion or rug
Leave it on the floor for a human to take and either bin or fridge
Abandon it in the garden to collect leaves, dirt and general grossness

The Bob Martin Prime Cuts Ham Bone product is a cured bone, i.e. has not been cooked, and poses no more of a hazard to a dog eating it than a raw bone purchased from a butcher.

I still wouldn't use these or similar.  Any bone that has seen further than the butcher's block doesn't pass muster

rinse it, bag it, into the fridge. your dog will be happy to keep munching it till its stinking so the length of time you store it is up to you and your nose

I gave mine one of these, may them very very thirsty and they weed every where

I'm with Teri - I only give mine bones from the butcher.

As for storing them - my Malamute stores them in a hole and digs them up whenever she feels peckish!

I think they're really salty aren't they. I give mine raw bones from the butcher and just leave them out. Even fresh meaty bones are stripped bare before they have time to go really rank.

If you are still contemplating using these I would want to go back to Bob Martin for more info on their curing process and what they use in that process.

Raw bones here too, smellier the better!

I store bones in the freezer. Once the dog has finished with it for the day it gets wrapped in a carrier bag and put back in ready to come out again another day if there is anything left on it. One dog will spend hours gnawing on a bone but the other will have a quick gnaw and then walk off and leave it - or bury for later use

I agree raw only. May have said this before.but last large bone got hidden in the garden then found  and bought in while I wasnt looking. He took it upstairs on to the landing, his favourite place . Unfortnately dropped it down thew stairs where it split open leaving the hall carpet seething with mud and maggotts !! Lovely

Was that freeze it before or after the maggots got there LO! Still he is a raw fed dof so I quess it was just extra protein

I feeed mine raw bones, then pick the marrowbone out with a stick for them, when they cant get it out!! lol

There bones last about 2 hours, but if its a vension bone, takes them days!

if you go to the supermarket they have packs of lamb bones, about 6 in total, for about 50p.  our rotties love them, and they have one every morning - keeps their poo nice too... as opposed to a bit squitty if they have packaged bones!!

wowEltro which supermarkets do you have around you?, you are so lucky to find bones  we havent got them here in Croydon at any price. I use sainsburys basics frozen chicken bits and get other frozen meat direct from a supplier or the butcher

but cant get anything else from supermarket.

If your supermarket is the same as mine ... They have put them up to 96p here and and getting harder to come by ... Look out farm shops that do butchering , and ask what is the best day to collect bones ... it saves them paying waste on their bin days ...

Hi Alfsmum.  I always freeze the fresh bones I buy from the butchers before feeding to the dogs after reading a thread on here somewhere about spores in raw meat which can cause fatal illness to dogs.  The freezing process kills the spores apparently. 

I know this might seem a silly question but if i go to the butchers what kind of bone do i ask for???

Umm . . . Do you know -  I've never asked what bones they are!  Oops! I think its lamb but not 100% sure. Judging by the size of the bones it must be.  I don't feed BARF as I don't have much freezer space for storage of dog food.  I feed JWB complete and only pick up bones once a week as a treat for them.  Three smallish packs cost me £1, much cheaper than dried pigs ears or ox pizzle (which they adore).  I usually give them one bone a day but partially defrost the bones in a bowl of warm water before giving to them.  Works for us anyway!

I just asked the butcher for a huge bag of dog bones, they looked a little confused but when i said another lady comes here they knew what i was asking for.
