Hi, I'm a newbie here with a question.  I was hoping to switch my very small toy breed puppy from Royal Canin mini to James Wellbeloved puppy performance dry.  She prefers the flavour of the JWB, but I've found the kibble size of the lamb & rice variety too large for her.  The round shape means I can't break it apart, and I prefer to feed it dry rather than soaking.  She isn't keen on the turkey & rice which did have a slightly smaller kibble.  Does anyone know if any of their other dry puppy varieties has a particularly small kibble?  You would think they'd take these things into account when formulating the product!  Thanks very much for your help.

Cant you feed her on the puppy kibble, which would be smaller to suit a small breed size?

The reason for why I don't feed James Wellbeloved to my toydogs (I do to the big dogs) is that it doesn't have a small kibble size -it's just much too large in the adult varieties. The puppy food kibble size is fine, but I wouldn't want to feed my dogs on puppy for life. The JW puppy size is just slightly smaller than the Royal Canin mini ADULT pieces, so I use RC for the toys because of this. Always felt it was such a great shame. Maybe we should all lobby JW to introduce a mini size??

I use Arden Grange (adult) chicken and the kibble size is small, much smaller than JWB.  You might want to ask if you can get a sample for the adult or the puppy variety.  I thought most manufacturer's suggest puppy or performance for toy breeds?

Thanks for your help.  Yes, I am referring to the puppy size JWB, not the adult size.  The shape of the lamb & rice puppy kibble is almost round like a pellet - I was worried she would choke on it at one point, and had to wedge it out of her mouth!

Never heard that one before. Quite the opposite, they tend to say the toy breeds should be switched onto adult much sooner than larger breeds, like 6-8 months or similar. But I haven't checked all foods of course.

The early switching is for large/giant breeds to slow down the growth.

I too have always seen on many foods it advised to feed puppy to toy breeds because of it's high calorie content as many toy breeds have a fast metabolism, tendency to need high amounts of energy being energetic, but because of small size loosing body heat quickly, and also many toys are picky so the amount needed of the more calorie dense puppy food will suit many of them who have a problem with maintaining condition on other foods.

This is interesting about toy breeds staying on puppy formulas.  One of the reasons I wanted to switch my pup to JWB puppy dry is because she is already on their wet pouches (she was such a poor eater on the dry that I did this to stimulate her appetite).  The pouch says to change to adult after six months, but maybe I should keep her on the puppy pouch?  Any opinion?

Hi, I have 3 shih tzu's, they are all fed on jwb puppy as the adult is just too large. One is 8months old,and my other two are 3 and 4years old.
The turkey and rice puppy has the smallest size kibble just to let you know.

Not from what I've read on some of the dog food web sites.  The guidance usually says something about toy breeds eat so little they need to consume more nutrients/kalories in the food they do eat.
