my friend has a litter of 2 week old puppies (her first) and all been doing well until now. yesterday one of the bigger stronger puppies started snuffling and sounding quite mucousy. she took her vets and got her an anti b injection and a course of synulox drops, he was unsure of what it could be. advised keep her warm and make sure shes eating.
pup is still eating, and is bright otherwise. my friend was unsure whether to keep her seperate from the rest of the litter or not? also has anyone had any experience of this, she doesnt think its Kennel Cough as she has several adult dogs who are all fine (they havent been in direct contact with puppies yet, just mum, who gets cleaned after shes been outside for a pee)

How strange, almsot exaclty the same thing happened to one of mine on Tuesday.  She is the biggest, greediest pup, and was 10 days old on Tuesday.  I am having to put them on to Mum for each feed, and she took the 3 o'clock fine, however at 6 pm she did not want to take the teat, and when I picked her up for a lcose look she sounded sort of "gluggy" if you know what I mean, although her lungs sounded fine, it was upper respiratory, and she was breathing thorugh her mouth, which always panics me.  Rushed her to vets, who stayed open to let us get there, and she confirmed lungs OK, gave her anti-biotic shot and one to help breathing, and then kept her in over night on ogygen.   Go her home at 9 am absolutley fine, and she has been OK since, although have kept up her synulox drops.  Vet suggested she might have got stuck somewhere, of sat on  by mum, but as my girls feed the pups on the bed, and are only visiting the whelping box with me (not maternal, some of mine) I confidently could say there was not where to get stuck, so did not follow up why she though this - we decided she had been too greedy with previous feed and got inot some trouble.  Wonder if the get stuck theory coudl have been the root of your friend's pup's problem?

thanks for replying! i went to see the pups this afternoon to assist with worming (fun!) and the pup looks well, but still sounds a bit gurgly, and it is upper respiratory as well. very strange. she is still feeding well, and can breathe through nose but with noise.
not sure of she could have got stuck, i will phone her and ask. i'll also ask in work tomorrow, see if anyone can shed any light on it.

I think there is a bug going around at the moment, 2 of my bitches are sneezing like mad, they don't seem ill or have a temperature though.

A bunch of mine had the equivalent of a doggy cold early in the summer, no coughing at all, just runny noses and sneezes - we did a charit dog walk, and 3 of them wnet down iwht it within a couple of days, after about 2 weeks over half of thme had caught it, wiht varying degrees of severity.  Only one needing vet care was Puglet, who has breathing trouble anyway (she is my small special needs pug).  Heard form various other people throughout the summer who had got it too.  However, that was not like what was wrong wiht the pup - she was compelety OK after the night at the vets, no breathing problems, no sneezing, no runny nose.  In all my years breeding I have never had this before.

I have had this happen once I think if you keep that particular puppy quite warm even at times putting inside your jumper it can "dry out" internally.

hi i have a litter of 5 they are 11 days old now and over the weekend when they were 8 day i noticed the bigger pup(boy) seemed very restless and kept whimpering which he hadnt done before, then he started sneezing and i started to panic, his breathing sounded funny at times to. took him, rest of pups and mum to vet yesterday and they are all healthy she said he may have had dust up nose or mucus but he sounds healthy and she even said his restlessness could have been due to growth spurt or tummy ache but he is much better now no sneezing and has settled. it is very worrying especially as they cant tell you if they are in pain.
