Hello all

I have been trying to find information on what causes fat deposits to go in the eyes of dogs, and all I can find about it, is that its because the fat content is to high in the food, and that Miniature Pinschers are prone to this.

I cant find any info other than that. 

Does anyone know more information about this?  How to get rid of it?

This happened to a friend of mine. Her golden retriever had this fat deposit at an eye test and he was fed on tripe and biscuit. The opthalmologist advised her to change his food which she did and the fat deposit disappeared!!! Not sure how or why it happens but it soon disappeared once she had put him on to a normal complete diet!

do you happen to know what food?  Maybe I can get it here.  I currently feed Eagle Pack Salmon, Anchoive and Sardine.  I was going to switch off this food anyways, as all I can smell is fish!  It is seeping through the coat, and I hate smelling fish at the best of times, and definately dont want my dogs to smell like it.

I will try and find out for you, but i'm quite sure it was Purina Pro Plan as we all had ours on the same food through the breeder servce. Will check with her anyway and let you know!

henry used to have these until I changed him to Burns and then they disappeared from both eyes! magic!

One of my previous dogs had it as a pup.  I was really worried and took her to an eye specialist.  He said many Cavaliers have it as pups and it disappears, by the age of 6 months hers did too.  He told me not to worry.

I was thinking of switching back to Pro Plan.  It would be easier when all the dogs are on it, instead of one being on it, and two being on Eagle. 

How can you tell ?

Sort of bloodshot eyes, well little red dots in the eye was what I saw in my dog when I was told it was fatty deposits.

I thought it was little white/grey dots in the eye?

I think you might find that it is Corneal Dystrophy & is actually a deposit of fats & calcium which is epithelial/stromal dystrophy

LOLOL CD is the grey white deposits seen in Cavaliers eyes & doesn't affect them at all-not really much to do with diet as I believe that it is genetic

Well by the sounds of it then my dog definitely didn't have this!!  Only lasted a few weeks and was gone at 6 months of age.

Mine has grey dots in the browns of her eyes.  Not on the pupil.  I was told it was fatty deposits.

Oh, if that is right, weight has now lifted from my shoulders. 

My youngest GSD had this when he was around a year old. I was told it was fatty deposits - corneal dystrophy the signs are white to grey marks in the eyes. He is nearly 4 now and for the last couple of years it seems to have disappeared. I am careful not to overdo the fat in his diet. For example if he has a couple of chicken wings, I trim off as much excess skin as possible.

Even if the deposits don't disappear, it doesn't affect their eyesight apparently. The deposits appear in an oval around the pupil, so they never obscure the eyesight anyway.

I know exactly what you are talking about.  I thought I was going crazy, because my mom and my aunt couldnt see what I was talking about.  I was thinking of having MY eyes checked! 

But when we had the dog in for checks with KC, the vet noticed her eyes.  Did some stains and tear tests, and some other things, and sent home some eye gel, and said it was fatty deposits. 

I got her on a food called Solid Gold.  It has low fat (10%), medium protien levels, and low phosphorus. 

All I could think of, when I was seeing this, was like what Joy had, she had PRA, and I definately didnt want that! 

Nobody but myself and the vet could see it either, try as I might I just could not get anyone else to see it! When I first noticed it, it was really just one bright white mark, and I thought he had something on his eye. That then disappeared, but he had a small series of smeary grey marks one particularly evident in one eye, but only when you looked at it at just the right angle.

We went to an eye specialist just to confirm what it was, although my vet was certain and they confirmed it but said it would never go, but I am quite sure it has, having done regular 'peering' since . Happily no, nothing like PRA.
