My Bernese has been having very itchy spots and i have washed him in Maleseb, scrubbed some areas with hibiscrub and also put cream on some flaky areas, oh and tried piriton.
If you touch his back very lightly he flinches and wants to srcatch. I have been wondering what this could be and then as i have gone through his fur with a fine tooth comb yet again i have found some very small pimple like lumps on the skin on the top of his back. Now i have found these i am considering the vets as its causing him some discomfort, but at the same time while i sit and wait for tomorrow to come and book an appointment has anyone heard of anything like this. They have gone a little scabby from where he has been scratching and are lightly brown in colour. In other areas it looks like a form of dematitus(sp) where is scabby and flaky skin but no lump.

I did post something in the showing section and itchy spots and them suddenly coming on.

I can live with a skin problem, but small lumps worry me a little.
RIP Bentley - such a wonderful dog to live with, never forgotten.

Hi Sue

From the description and your lad's reaction it sounds similar to a hot spot which one of mine had many years ago that turned into wet excema.  It was clearly uncomfortable and treated with a special cream which whas used to quite firmly wipe the area removing any flaked/scabbed areas repeatedly until it dried out (cream wasn't to be obviously left on the affected skin).  It did require that a fairly large patch of coat was cut away which took almost a year to eventually disappear but that was of no consequence as the main thing was the problem cleared up (from memory) in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully it's something even less bothersome for your lad but if it turns out to be this it's thankfully not serious however exacerbated by too much grooming so best keep that to a minimum around the area until properly examined and diagnosed :-)

regards, Teri
Why bite when a simple growl will do ;-)
