Barak Obama - the new president of the United states of America..

In his speech today, he mentioned breifly his family, and said that when they move into the whitehouse they will be getting a new puppy...

Any guesses on the breed of dog this will be :-)?

- i dont know why but a bassett hound came to mind
By ChristineW (****) [gb] Date 05.11.08 19:51 GMT

Apparently one of his daughters has expressed an interest in a Golden Retriever/ poodle cross.

Think its a Goldendoodle, or something similar!
One is never enough!!
By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 05.11.08 20:24 GMT
It's a crossbreed. ;-)

A mongrel then : )
By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 05.11.08 22:23 GMT
No, technically a crossbreed is a combination of only two pure breeds; a mongrel has one or both parents who are themselves of more than one breed.

I remember this article from a while back saying he wanted a Goldendoodle and PETA wrote to him saying don't buy a purebred dog (rolleyes)

I stand corrected then Jeangenie

Sounds like compensation for not seeing much of his kids for a while. Hope its not an impulse buy, after all will they have enough time to bring up a puppy?
By snowflake (*) Date 06.11.08 10:05 GMT
Well I suppose the mention of a puppy is supposed to make everyone feel good - don't forget everything in his speeches is carefully manufactured.

I am sure the little soul will have the best of care though - they seem like a nice family.

PS As an orator he is truly impressive I think and reminds me of Jack Kennedy .......
By yrlance (***) [gb] Date 06.11.08 11:09 GMT
Yes i worried when he said about a pup, the Lab jumped to mind, don't know why.
Lots going on over there i would be worried about his security now, Kennedy jumps to mind and what that family went through.

Should get a Spanish Water Dog then if that's the type they want.  Have you seen the numerous health problems listed on America's health testing sites for cross Poodles such as these, not good reading.  Well actually it is as it proves what we've been saying on here all along that these crosses are no healthier than pedigrees!

Must admit my first worry when heard that he is to be the new president that he would have to ensure his and his families security!

it was first mentioned a long long time ago, so apparently he put it off till the election was over.

the only thing i thought was odd in the speech i heard was that his children had 'won the right to have a puppy'!  I must admit that was when my ears really pricked up!!  I hope that they have researched everything they can about owning a puppy.  I don't care about status in people, you need to do your homework and have the time, commitment and care to own a puppy/dog.

perhaps he and his wife set them research etc to do to prove they could help look after one?

I can see him with a Weim, he is a sleek man and would suit this sleek looking gundog.
RIP Bentley - such a wonderful dog to live with, never forgotten.

At least the dog will have lots of room to run around in. I agree, he looks like a Weim kinda man.
What other dogs have been in the White House?
Has Downing Street ever had a canine occupant?
The more i experience men, the more i appreciate dogs.

He said the children had earned the right to have a pup when I watched on TV ;-)

I could see him with a Lab :-)

I couldn't help thinking he's a smart man - get a pup when it's someone else's carpet getting pooed and wee'd on :-D :-D :-D

Wish I could have done that :-D

ETA Little-Un thinks it will be great them having a pup - now where'd he put that really important document on the financial situation??  Oh Darn it! the pup's gone and ate it again!

Apparently Joe Biden's wife told him they could get a "big dog" if elected.  Some of the British newspapers today had features on presidential pooches.  There was a nice photo of Dick Cheney's labradors dressed up as Darth Vader and Superman for a Halloween party last year.  This year they went as Batman and Robin.

I read that one of the children has allergies so it might have to be one of the so-called hypo-allergenic breeds.
By briedog (*****) [gb] Date 07.11.08 07:45 GMT
spanish water dog then but i bet they not heard of one of them
By suejaw (***) [gb] Date 07.11.08 08:42 GMT
I think that whatever they decide on that they don't promote it.
Can you imagine the American public all wanting the same breed or cross.
Even if they get one from rescue i think they should say it is a poodle cross or something rather than say its a designer breed or what ever silly name has been made up.

I personally fear for all those who will try and get the same type of dog and not know what they are doing and instead of rescuing they will look to pet shops, byb and puppymills.
RIP Bentley - such a wonderful dog to live with, never forgotten.

Article in the Times today - says that by making a choice he will alienate some voters because dog owners tend to be breed biased.  The article suggests a 'rodenliegh scruffy' (must have spelt that wrong because I can't google it)  reputed to be the brightest dog - it can learn up to 15 words!  Then it mentions that getting a dog to talk is a  popular interest over there at the moment!!!  :-o  Have I just landed on another planet.  I was thinking my dog knows more than 15 words - didn't know there was a limit.  Not sure they meant commands.  Perhaps I had better reread the article.
By cheekychow (****) [gb] Date 09.11.08 12:14 GMT
I read in one of the tabloids today that he was getting a westie as they are non-allergenic.  Are they???
ali - with a staffy and a rottie not a chow, but very cheeky!
By ceejay (****) [gb] Date 09.11.08 13:22 GMT
Never heard that - there is another little white dog which has a woolly coat that is said to be non-allergenic - can't remember the breed just now - don't know what is the matter with my brain this morning.
By newf3 (****) [gb] Date 09.11.08 14:13 GMT
change of subject.
what will happen when the pup pee's in the ovel office?   ( tonge firmly in cheeK ) LOL
