I am hoping to get a new pup before the end of the year and have been waiting for a dog from this breeder for the last few years.  It is only now that the timing is right and there is hopefully a pup for me in the litter born last week.  My staffy has been used to being an only dog for nearly 6 years and now she is going to have to share me.

I want to make the process as easy as possible for her as she can be a grumpy little madam around other dogs if she hasn't decided she likes them.  the only breed she seems to adore are rotties and since I adore them too, our new addition will be a rott boy.  So, I am looking for ways to make things easier for my staff to adapt.

Any tips regarding introducing them etc?  Should I be asking the breeder to keep a towel or something in with the pups that I can bring home so my current dog gets used to the smell before he comes home?  Also are there any good books about the dynamics of multi-dog households.  I had a browse on amazon last night but wasn't sure what to look for.  Thanks in advance.

You've done the right thing going for the opposite sex, that should help.

If you private message me I'll send you a couple of links to interviews I've done about introducing a new pup to your existing dog, and about settling a new pup in generally. (Don't want to be accused of advertising)

From our experience it can seem to begin with that the two dogs will never be comfortable around each other, but before you know it they are good friends. Our Lab was terrified of the tiny Bichon puppy we brought home two years ago, but they love each other now. It's lovely to see their relationship develop. In our case the older dog realising that the puppy was a good playmate really helped.

Good luck!
