Do dogs get anaemia if so what are the signs and symptoms??
Theres always room on the sofa for another ......
poppyspot a lot like humans, pale gums, pale eyelids, being lethargic, decreased exercise tolerance.

Katt is spot on...

Just that, if you ARE worried, or know someone that is...it should be treated as an Emergency...
Silence is often misinterpreted, but never misquoted.
Great personality, shame about the looks...!!!
Hi Katt
Forgot to mention she is 8 weeks pregnant dont know if this makes a difference, shes not particularly lethargic, her coat is shiny, nose cold and wet and her gums being a chocolate are chocolate and not too pale.

What is making you consider that she may be anaemic?

Congrats on the pregnancy

If I was you I would take her for a check-up at the vets all worth it for peace of mind.
I hope all goes well do you know how many she may have?
My bloody boyfriend!!!! I personally think she looks fine but shes his baby girl shes still keen to run around and play with our other dogs think he may be over reacting cos hes just stated the obvious that even most pregnant women can look a little pale and tired around the eyes and maybe its just that!! But thanks to you all will keep a careful eye on her over the next day or so and see how she is as its only tonight that hes mentioned it....

awww poppyspot it rather cute that he cares so much.

If her gums are pigmented you are not really going to be able to tell there. You could try her lower eye lids if they are unpigmented but really, in the last week they will be a bit tired and slowing down. Is she eating a good quality food?
Not sure why we are telling
you this, it says in your profile you are a nurse!

Hi,
Yes dogs do get anaemia. My 3yr JRT had it. He had very pale gums almost white most of the time, although they did pink up at times. He was also slightly quieter than normal and didn't want to walk too far.
The vet put him on iron tablets and he had weekly blood tests. Each week despite the iron he was getting worse and things were not looking good.
Then I changed his diet and within a week he was back to normal. Iron tablets stopped and his blood tests were normal. He has had no sign since and that must be a year ago now.
He does suffer with a lot of acid reflux though and I think he may have had a stomach ulcer that was bleeding.
He now has his food split into 4 meals a day and that seems to keep him under control.
He is also a very allergic dog so I have to be very careful what he eats and comes into contact with.
