Hiya, My 11 1/2 year old Boston has cataracts, has any one out there had them removed and what sort of success did you have? Also what follow up medications are needed and if so for how long? We are at the point now to go ahead, he has had a very nasty eye ulcer which wouldnt get better, had a graft on it but still has been very slow to heal, at last it healing and we can now think about the cataract op. I dont want to put him through more surgery if the op. wouldnt be benificial for him. It is very costly but if he could have a better quality of life for the few years he will have left, then we will go ahead.

Have you been through all of this with an Opthamologist(sp)? Or is it your vet who would be doing this?

im with suejaw, i would consult an opthamologist and speak to them regarding your queries.

I had a dog that developed cataracts (though slightly later) and was almost totally blind by the time she was 13. She lived another happy year, almost completely unfazed by her lack of sight, relying on her hearing to not get lost offlead in the fields. I thought about having one cataract removed, but as she was in no discomfort I decided against it.

Dogs don't rely their sight the same way that we do. Their powers of scent and hearing more than compensate, as I learned watching a labrador which had had both eyes removed because of glaucoma sniff out and retrieve fallen game.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

My 14 year has very little sight now and doesn't hear too good either but she is perfectly happy and confident apart from when she goes out into the garden at night time, when she likes to stand and sniff the air for a bit before committing herself to plunging out there.
Unless they are having problems I would leave well alone, personally.

My previous 12 and a half year old couldn't cope when she lost both hearing and sight soon after each other.  Eye sight went first and then hearing soon afterwards.  She would just throw herself on the floor, even in the back garden and just didn't want to do anything.

Don't mean this in a nasty way but what lifespan do Boston's have?
My dogs aren't my whole life, but my life wouldn't be whole without them. 05/01/08 11 stone 12 lbs
